The Hunter

I wrote the lyrics to The Hunter with someone in mind ... someone very close to me. Needless to say I know this character rather well, and no, I would never want to be caught by him when he's in his predator mode. He has heard the song and digs it, by the way.

My brother Tor took the lead vocals on this. When he sings lyrics I've written he'll quite often free edit them on the fly - meaning he mixes up my lines. I've seen him tear through three or four of my song lyrics, grabbing phrases and bits at the mic in a scramble that I can't help but admire for the spontaneity of it. That didn't happen on this song - he did manage to keep himself to what I had down on the page - but he did mix things up, particularly in the chorus. I really enjoy the metering he managed, and the back-up vocals were a breeze to do. Did I mean to do such an Iron Maiden thing? Not really, it just felt right. And I think it sounds right.

The Hunter was one of the original four songs Deemed Psychotic did as a demo, by the way.

Sampled Sweetness

The studio was up and humming yesterday with Dream Quest ripping apart our song 'The Hunter' to sample for a new groove. It'll be available as a free download and it is sounding so sweeeeeeet right now! I'm going to add it to my iPod mix as soon as it's done...

How we got our name

REASON NUMBER 6:

Both Tor & myself grew up watching Looney Tunes cartoons (I'm talking about the good OLD ones). As children, we didn't think much about the name Looney Tunes, but literal translations make it crazy music. Since we love cartoons and have been accused of making crazy music it somehow seemed to fit. And if we do crazy music, we figured we must be Deemed Psychotic....

The Kids of Today

ABOUT THE KIDS OF TODAY

Well, first off, this is just a rough recording from rehearsals. We wanted a good sound for the band but nothing over the top with studio magic. This is close to something you'd hear us do live.

I wrote the lyrics mostly for the kids in the local town here (Bantry, Ireland). This is a very small town I'm talking about; the longest stretch of 'down town' is about 3 blocks, and that's ending at the Catholic church. Needless to say, the kids from about 8 & up have nothing to do and lots of them spend their time getting wasted in the fields. Family problems, including physical and sexual abuse are pretty common here.

But travelling around the world has shown me one thing very clearly: these problems are not isolated in one area, or to one culture or country. They are everywhere. It disgusts me how adults get away with the shit they do with kids. So the song grew from just talking about Bantry to talking about all kids, everywhere.

I've found the lyrics in the song are something just about every kid can relate to but older people just can't. I shared this with a 46 year old who made the comment that all kids have problems growing up and the youth of today should just learn to deal with it. I pointed out that when this person had gone to school they were not forced to go through metal detectors and Columbine was just a sick idea floating around in the universe. As you might guess, I was blown off and ignored.

How can adults give lip service to the idea that 'our children are our future' and get away with treating them like this? And how, in all good conscience, can the rest of us let it continue?

Irish Legends..

So our friend Rowena stopped by yesterday for a chat. Seems she was talking to some people in Galway that she knows through various channels. This couple in Galway had gotten a hold of our first release, The 1st, and were loving it. They put it on and said, 'you just HAVE to hear this band'. She said she sat for a moment, then said 'yeah, I remember being in the studio when they recorded this song'. Well, the couple just grilled her for about an hour on Dark World and Deemed Psychotic...she laughed because they were actually jealous of her for being in the studio and knowing us. Since she's known us for so long she just finds that amusing; she's been here enough to know studio work is terribly boring in reality. I told her to keep notes; when the band breaks she can make a killing on her memoirs.

Don't shoot the messenger

GUNAHOLICS ANNONYMOUS

1 - Do you wish people would mind their own business about guns-- stop telling you what to do??In G.A. we do not tell anyone to do anything. We just talk about our own guns, the trouble we got into, and how we stopped using them. We will be glad to help you, if you want us to.

2 - Have you ever switched from one kind of gun to another in the hope that this would keep you from shooting??We tried all kinds of guns. We got smaller guns. Or just used pea shooters. Or we did not shoot pistols. Or only shot on weekends. You name it, we tried it. But if we shot anything with bullets in it, we usually got wasted eventually.

3 - Do you envy people who can shoot things without getting into trouble??At one time or another, most of us have wondered why we were not like most people, who really can take guns or leave guns.

4 - Have you had problems connected with guns during the past year??Be honest! Sharpshooters say that if you have a problem with guns and keep on shooting, it will get worse -- never better. Eventually, you will die, or end up in an institution for the rest of your life. The only hope is to stop shooting.

5 - Do you hide guns around the house?
Many of us kidded ourselves into thinking that we used guns because we wanted to. After we came into G.A., we found out that once we started to shoot, we couldn't stop.

6 - Do you watch shooting and gun orientated films to escape reality?
Most of us in G.A. tried to watch all kinds of films by ourselves and with our families. We could not watch them. Then we came to G.A. G.A. said: "Just try not to watch gun films today." (If you do not watch gun films today, you will not start thinking about shooting today.)

7 - Do you need a gun to feel like a man/woman?
If you need a gun to get started, or to stop shaking, it's a pretty sure sign that you are not shooting "socially."

8 - Do you find yourself thinking about guns at inappropriate times, like when your spouse is talking to you or your child is screaming?
Before we came into G.A., most of us said that it was the people or problems at home that made us use guns. We could not see that our shooting just made everything worse. It never solved problems anywhere or anytime.

9 - Do you ever try to get "extra" guns at a dealer because you do not own enough??Most of us used to buy a "few" before we started out if we thought it was going to be that kind of day. And if guns were not exchanged fast enough, we would go some place else to get more.

10 - Do you have "shoot-outs"??A "shoot-out" is when we have been using guns for days which we cannot remember. When we came to G.A., we found out that this is a pretty sure sign of gunaholic shooting.

11 - Have you missed days of work or school because of guns??Many of us admit now that we "called in sick" lots of times when the truth was that we were on a shoot-out.

12 - Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you did not own a gun??Many of us started to use guns because shooting made life seem better, at least for a while. By the time we got into G.A., we felt trapped. We were shooting to live and living to shoot. We were sick and tired of being sick and tired.
