About Soul Circumference

“Blister in the Sun” is the song that brought the band together. I had met Brock Ursum in English class and the two of us had become close friends through our music interests. One day after school I came over with my sister to jam with Brock. Brock played the drums and my sister Maddie and I played guitar and sang. Someone started playing the intro riff to the renowned Violent Femmes tune and Brock came in with the drums. From that day fourth we would continue to play almost every day. Brock’s parents are some of the kindest people I have ever known. My sister and I practically lived with them during the summer.

At that time the band was called Teenage Martyr. I am not sure what we were going for with that one. A few months later we tried recording a CD the only problem was the lack of bass player. None of us, at the time, could play the bass well and the songs really didn’t sound to our liking. We put the CD on hiatus until we had a bass player. Brock had a good friend named Jon Chadwell (but no one calls him by his first name), who played the bass better than anyone I knew in my school. For some reason though Chadwell and I had never gotten along, which is ironic because he is now one of my best friends to date. The tension dropped immediately when we started playing together, and the four of us were always hanging out even when we were not playing.

It was decided that the name had to be changed we weren’t sure what type of a band we were at the time, but the name Soul Circumference seemed to fit. I guess it suits us now that we generally have a more psychedelic/alternative style of a band. We began playing concert clubs as often as we could our first official gig was at a place in Cleveland called Peabodys. From an aesthetic standpoint this was no upscale place, but recently it has held venues including names as prominent as Disturbed and Mushroomhead. We were honored to play where they had. After that we looked up as many of those places as we could and played at as many of them as we could. Through the next year we built up a large collection of venues that we had played at including the HI/FI Club, the Daily Double, Fat Jimmies and the Agora. However, Peabodys was our main venue. We also played at several smaller venues and restaurants, which commonly had us play unplugged. Outside of that we played a lot of parties and some out door fairs in our town.

Finally we got down to making a CD. Through another band that we had played with at a show, met a guy who was just starting a recording studio. Mat got along with us from the get-go. Most of the bands he had recorded before us were primarily screamo/hardcore, and he was happy to branch out and try something else. The recording sessions went great until Mat got caught up in a bunch of other business obligations and couldn’t mix or master our CD. Eventually after a lot of people, who had pre ordered CDs, and pretty much paid for the recording, began to complain. We had to pull the tracks from him and finish them the best we could on our own. To this day we don’t have a completely finished studio CD, but in early December of 07 we cut a live CD at a private performance at lava room studio. This was a great opportunity to bring out a lot of sounds and qualities that are usually only heard on our CDs, such as a violin, which I played. Currently the tracks are available online and have received several thousand plays in the past few weeks.

Currently the band is writing a new song, which should be recorded through a home-studio, but with high end gear to ensure a solid sound. The song will have a heavily animated music video, which is currently being created by me and many other students in the Denison animation team.

All the members of Soul Circumference are able to play each others main instruments which include the bass, drums, electric and acoustic guitar. Outside of those I will usually incorporate sounds from a harmonica, tin flute, keyboard, which can also be played by Maddie. Also the violin, the talk box (as heard in the song “Worn”) and sometimes a megaphone for vocals can be heard on certain songs.
